PCIe 5.0 SSDs read at up to 14,900 MB/s, about twice as fast as the Gen4 drives in most mini PCs. But two things limit them in a small box: very few mini PCs have a Gen5 M.2 slot, and every Gen5 drive heats up fast under heavy, sustained writes. This guide covers both: which mini PCs actually support Gen5, and which Gen5 drives behave best in a small, warm case. Prices were checked on Amazon on October 10, 2026.
Does your mini PC have a PCIe 5.0 slot?
Gen5 M.2 slots appear mainly in mini PCs with Intel Core Ultra H and HX processors and in AM5 desktop-chip boxes. These models list a PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot on their official spec pages:
| Mini PC | Gen5 M.2 slots | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS NUC 16 Pro (Panther Lake) | 1 × Gen5 x4 + 1 × Gen4 x4 | Check the exact CPU for Gen5 on the cheapest models |
| ASUS NUC 15 Pro / NUC 15 Pro+ | 1 × Gen5 x4 (2280) | Gen5 only with Core Ultra CPUs; non-Ultra “Core” models run that slot at Gen4 |
| ASUS ROG NUC (2025, Core Ultra 9 275HX) | 1 × Gen5 x4 + 1 × Gen4 x4 | Ships with a Gen4 drive |
| Minisforum MS-03 (Panther Lake) | 2 × Gen5 x4 + 1 × Gen4 x1 | SSD heatsink in the box |
| GMKtec EVO-T2 (Core Ultra X7 358H / X9 388H) | 1 × Gen5 x4 + 1 × Gen4 x1 | |
| ASRock DeskMini X600 (AM5) | 1 × Gen5 x4 + 1 × Gen4 x4 | Gen5 speed needs a non-G Ryzen 7000/9000 CPU |
| Shuttle XPC SB860R8 | 1 × Gen5 x4 | Barebone |
Popular mini PCs that do not have a Gen5 M.2 slot: Minisforum MS-02 Ultra (its Gen5 is a PCIe card slot; every M.2 is Gen4), Minisforum MS-A2 (Gen4 and Gen3), Beelink GTi15 Ultra (Gen4; its Gen5 x8 port is only for the GPU dock), GEEKOM IT15 (Gen4) and every Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini PC (Gen4). A Gen5 drive works in those, but only at Gen4 speed, so buy one of our best PCIe 4.0 SSDs for mini PCs instead and save money.
One more reality check: PCWorld’s review of the Gen5-equipped Minisforum MS-03 found that its bundled 1TB drive managed only 5,791 MB/s reads. Having the slot does not mean the drive that came with the machine uses it.
The heat problem, in one paragraph
TechPowerUp tests every drive for throttling, and all four drives below slowed down “fairly quickly” when run bare under nonstop writes. That only matters for long, heavy jobs such as copying hundreds of gigabytes or writing video for minutes. Opening apps, loading games and loading AI models are short bursts and run at full speed. Two rules follow: choose a drive with a power-efficient controller, and use the thermal pad or heatsink your mini PC provides. Avoid tall aftermarket heatsinks; most mini PC lids will not close over them.

1. WD_Black SN8100: the best Gen5 SSD for a mini PC

Why it’s good: the SN8100 reaches 14,900 MB/s reads while drawing only 6.2 to 7.0 W under load, according to StorageReview, thanks to Silicon Motion’s 6nm SM2508 controller. It is single-sided up to 4TB, has a DRAM cache, and is rated for 600TB written per terabyte with a 5-year warranty. In TechPowerUp’s normal-use run it did not throttle, and with a compact heatsink it barely throttled even under the stress test.
👤 Ideal for: the owner of a Gen5 mini PC who wants the fastest drive that stays manageable in a small case.
Keep in mind: writes are 11,000 MB/s on the 1TB and 14,000 MB/s on the 2TB and 4TB. It is also sold as SanDisk Optimus GX Pro 8100.

2. Kingston FURY Renegade G5: the most endurance

Why it’s good: the same SM2508 controller with Kioxia TLC flash, 14,700 MB/s reads and 14,000 MB/s writes at 2TB, and the highest endurance here: 2,000TB written at 2TB, double the others. It is single-sided at every capacity, with a thin heat-spreader label, and Tom’s Hardware saw it reach only 52°C in its testing.
👤 Ideal for: heavy writers: video editors, people who rebuild AI datasets or run virtual machines on a mini PC workstation.
Keep in mind: Tom’s recommends extra cooling for the 4TB, which draws up to 9.5W. On Amazon the 2TB was sold by a third-party seller at $427.00.

3. Corsair MP700 Elite: the coolest-running Gen5 option

Why it’s good: Phison’s E31T controller was designed for low power, and Tom’s Hardware measured the MP700 Elite at under 6W peak, about half of the first Gen5 drives. It reads at 10,000 MB/s, still well above any Gen4 drive, is single-sided and only 2mm thick, and holds about 3 GB/s even when throttled, according to TechPowerUp.
👤 Ideal for: compact Gen5 mini PCs with no heatsink over the slot, where heat is the main concern.
Keep in mind: it is slower than the SN8100 on paper, and at $459.99 for 2TB it was priced high on the day we checked. A similar E31T drive, the Crucial P510, is cheaper while stock lasts.

4. Samsung 9100 Pro: fast, but only with cooling

Why it’s good: Samsung’s first consumer Gen5 drive reads at 14,700 MB/s, has a DRAM cache and is single-sided at 2TB, with a 5-year warranty and 600TB written per terabyte. At $249.99 for 1TB, sold by Amazon, it is priced close to the SN8100.
👤 Ideal for: mini PCs with a real metal heatsink over the Gen5 slot, such as the Minisforum MS-03.
Keep in mind: it had the worst thermal result of the four in TechPowerUp’s testing: bare, it throttled to about 1 GB/s writes with a hot spot of 106°C. The heatsink version is almost 9mm tall and will not fit most mini PCs.

Is Gen5 worth it in a mini PC?
In 2026, a good 1TB to 2TB Gen5 drive costs about the same as a premium Gen4 drive, so the price penalty is small. But you only get the extra speed in a Gen5 slot, and you feel it mainly when moving very large files or loading very large AI models. For gaming, office work and everyday use, a cool Gen4 drive is just as responsive. If your mini PC has the slot and you work with big files, the WD_Black SN8100 is the one we would buy.
