Most mini PCs have one or two M.2 slots, and a modern game library fills them fast. An external drive is the easy fix, but the right one depends on the port your mini PC has, not on the biggest number on the box. Buy for your port and you get every MB/s you pay for; buy the wrong one and a $400 drive runs like a $150 one.
Every price below was checked on the Amazon product page on October 7, 2026, the last day of Prime Big Deal Days. SSD prices have roughly doubled since late 2025 because of the memory shortage (a 2TB SanDisk USB4 drive went from $237.99 in October 2025 to $529.99 in July 2026, per cpricewatch) (our take on the RAM crisis), so look at the deal prices carefully.
First, check your port
| Port on your mini PC | Real speed limit | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 (40Gbps) | about 3,000 to 4,000 MB/s | A USB4 SSD (#1, #2) or a 40Gbps enclosure (#3, #4) |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 USB-C or USB-A (10Gbps) | about 1,000 MB/s | A 10Gbps SSD (#5, #6); anything faster is wasted |
| USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) | about 450 MB/s | A hard drive for backups (#10) |
The 20Gbps trap: drives sold as “USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, up to 2,000 MB/s” (#7, #8, #9) need a 2x2 port, which almost no mini PC has. Most USB4 ports do not support 2x2 mode either. On a typical mini PC those drives run at about 1,000 MB/s, the same as a cheaper 10Gbps drive. The 40Gbps label also describes the link, not every file copy: host, SSD, cable and heat decide real speed (Thunderbolt Laptop).
Can you play games from an external SSD? Yes. At 10Gbps or faster, games load close to a SATA SSD, which is fine for most of a Steam library. Keep your most-played and newest AAA games on the internal NVMe. Hard drives are for backups, not for games.
