Most Ryzen AI Max+ 395 laptops are gaming tablets or creator convertibles. The HP ZBook Ultra 14 G1a is the exception: a thin, conventional 14-inch business clamshell with the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 395, up to 128GB of memory, a 120Hz OLED option and HP’s workstation security and support. If your IT department needs a laptop that can load large AI models and still pass procurement, this is it.
This is the third of our four articles on the best Ryzen AI Max+ 395 laptops.

Performance
Laptop Mag, which gave it an Editor’s Choice, tested the 395 with 128GB:
- Geekbench 6: 2,837 single-core, 17,721 multi-core
- 3DMark Time Spy: 10,114
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 1080p: 81 fps
StorageReview measured 29,112 in Cinebench R23 multi-core and ran local language models. Its token generation results: about 65 tokens per second with Phi, 42 with Mistral, 36 with Llama 3 and 24.6 with Llama 2. StorageReview was also the most critical reviewer: it found the AI performance below a desktop workstation GPU and called the price of high-end configurations hard to justify.
KitGuru, which scored it 8/10, found it quiet and cool, around 60°C on battery and 70°C plugged in, with a 50% charge in 30 minutes.
Battery life
Results vary by test: Laptop Mag measured 6 hours 46 minutes in its web-surfing test, while StorageReview got 10 hours 35 minutes in PCMark 10’s office test. Laptop Mag measured the OLED at about 368 nits, on the dim side.
Prices: buy from HP
The ZBook Ultra’s price varies more than any laptop in this series. HP’s own store sells configurable models, and StorageReview cited an entry price of $2,599 and a maximum of $8,250. On October 10, 2026, Micro Center listed the 395 with 128GB at $3,949.99, while Amazon listings were much higher: $4,699 for 64GB and almost $6,900 for 128GB, both from third-party sellers. We recommend configuring it directly at HP.
Pros and cons
Pros
- The only Ryzen AI Max+ 395 laptop in a classic 14-inch business design
- Thin and well built, with a 120Hz OLED option and USB-C charging
- Up to 128GB of memory
- Quiet and cool; business security, management and warranty options
Cons
- Expensive, with wildly different prices between sellers
- Mixed battery results and a fairly dim OLED
- Grainy webcam
- HP’s 16-inch successor, the ZBook Ultra G3a with the Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495, goes on sale in the US this month
Who should buy it
Professionals and companies that need a 14-inch workstation able to load large models into memory: data scientists, CAD users and developers working with local AI, especially where IT management and an HP warranty matter. For personal use, the ROG Flow Z13 and ProArt PX13 offer the same chip for less.
